We are the sum total of our experiences.

Your expertise is a direct result of what you’ve done and accomplished.

Along the way, you’ve dealt with ups, downs, failures and successes – it’s these stories that contain the substance of value you have to offer others.

In fact, it’s the hairball stuff that people relate to the most. In many cases, people who are looking for help are going through the same exact conflict and struggles you successfully overcame.

Answers are what people want and need.

By sharing your stories, the good, the bad, the ugly, people will have an opportunity to relate with you and they can get a good sense of precisely how you can help them.

The most powerful stories come from people who lived them. People can spot a regurgitated second hand story a mile away and if you find yourself having to live up to and deliver that experience to help people out of bad situations, you’ll fall on your face.

That’s because you don’t have the know-how or emotional and mental toughness that is developed through experience.

The moral of the story; keep it real – be yourself – share your own experiences and the capabilities that came as a result.

If you do this, you’ll establish a platform of trustworthiness and integrity that can be built upon for years to come.

It’s these two things that great businesses and careers are built on.

“You need to first get your bearings and that is best accomplished through listening. If you’re a business professional and have a good idea of the type of professionals you want to connect with, you can rest assured that there’s a large community of these folks just waiting to connect & share with you. There are search functions (engines) on every social platform out there, including blogs…”

It’s funny how sometimes you don’t feel like you have ‘experienced’ enough in life but when you hear a story someone is telling, you can automatically relate to it because of a prior experience.

As in social, I have a varied collection of ‘friends’ in real life too. It allows me to experience different perspectives on things and be less judgmental before I start basing my decisions just on appearances.

I blend well, so I can be at the head table at a banquet or in the back cutting up with the cooks; this keeps it all in perspective.

I agree with what you are saying; it’s these qualities that can be used to help others in their business or personal situations they might be dealing with.

    Good to see you sir.

Well Bill, you always add weight to the conversation… You’ve obviously done well in life and business.

But there are very few who can cut up with the cooks like you do!

This keeps things in perspective… And fun!

You’re a great guy to share the journey with and to top it off, you still haven’t figured out what you want to be when you grow up, which’ll make it that much more interesting.

You’re going to be dangerous when you figured all this stuff out…

Thanks for popping in – it’s always appreciated : )

Keep it real. That’s what Mark is saying. It’s fundamental to social media. That’s social media 101. And I do not disagree.

But that’s not how marketing and advertising is done, you might think to yourself. Don’t you have to capture the imagination?!

Just take a few of the Superbowl ads as an example. Right?

The Bud Light Platinum ad? It’s a fail by all accounts. It just doesn’t relate.

How about Hyundai’s Rocky theme ad? It’ almost works. But the name, Hyundai, kinda doesn’t fit without any Koreans. If the frustrated professional had been an Asian and he had hummed the last line fo the melody, that might have moved it up.

Be you. Be true. Give. And you shall receive.

    Hey Mark,

I feel sometimes we tend to “make up” experiences to show ourselves in a better light. Maybe because the pressure of being the “experienced” one is quite an honorable one.

We are all humans and not matter where we live, we will have similar experiences, and if not, we would have different perspectives on the same issues. But yes, sometimes we can relates, sometimes we can’t and that is okay. Be proud to be yourself and others will appreciate you for what you really are and not what you pretend to be!

  • http://markharai.com Mark Harai

Hi Hajra – being honorable requires being honest with yourself and others about your experience.

That said, you’re right, there’s nothing new under the sun. We all have experiences that can add value to others. You don’t need to make things up; you just need to believe in yourself and understand that you have the ability to add value to others from right where you stand today.

Many times, by just taking your attention off yourself and putting on that on others around you, it can open doors that lead to opportunities, productivity and a whole bunch of ways to help others, server others and discover the value you have to provide to others.

Thanks so much for visiting today Hajra!

There’s a clear distinction with all of this Stan, thanks for pointing that out.

By understanding marketing, advertising, PR, the social web and the benefits of each, you can develop a cohesive strategy that have all of your touch-points with the marketplace contribute to an overall effective communication strategy.

This can effectively tell people the story of your business, what you stand for and secure new customers/clients for your business.
    Great add, thanks bro!

Great advice. So often people aren’t ‘real’ and then even if a match is made, it’s a mismatch. I believe honor and integrity are lacking in so many today.
