5 Tips on How to Create the Best Work Environment for Your Startup

Trust – always be honest with your team on the condition of your startup – always follow through with what you say you’re going to do. Exaggerating and embellishing facts and promising things you either can’t or don’t intent to follow-through with will destroy your credibility and chance to build something great.

Team Work – a team environment will get everyone on the same page and working for the same goals. It makes everyone accountable for victories as well as defeats and will help drive a winning attitude throughout the organization. Beware of knuckleheads and who think they’re better than everyone else – they’re only interested in looking good, many times at the expense of others, and can thwart the success of the team.

Recognition – publicly recognize top performers, show them how much you appreciate their hard work and great results – building up the confidence and pride of your people will inspire them to do even better.

Advancement Opportunities – promote from within – provide opportunities for those who have the desire, drive and capabilities to advance their careers.

Profit Sharing/ Stock Options – create a structure for your team that will provide a sense of ownership and an opportunity for them to share in the profits of what they’re building – you’ll attract go-getter’s vs. time clock punchers.

Right on Mark. Yes beware of the superstars in the team who think that the team is there to support them in their quest for glory. They might do a great job but in the end they will destroy the team. I have seen many teams literally explose because of member acts like a rock star. Ego is what gets you killed.

Hi John – indeed, I’ll take a team player over a primadonna any day of the week.

Thanks for sharing a piece of your mind here :-)

This is very interesting Mark. I’m about to start my own company, and I’ll be the only person working. But I’ve been thinking about having a team of people around me. Because I clearly need help, even though I’m all alone working for my company, it doesn’t mean that I can (and should) work all alone :)

Well, you start where you start Jens and build from there.

There’s an outsource resource I use quite a bit called oDesk. I’m sure you’ve probably heard of it. You can find some great people for  reasonable fees.

Many people turn into full time employees here or JV partners. You can find quality people here for writing, coding, design work and much much more!
I’m very exited for you Jens!
